Wellbutrin Full Dose Information in Questions
Can I restart taking Wellbutrin at the full dose after being off it for 3months? I took Wellbutrin XL for 2 years. I started at 150mg for 3 days, then went to 300mg the rest of the time. I stopped taking it 3 months ago b/c of financial reasons, but I'm ready to go back on it now. I was wondering if I can jump right back on at the full 300mg or if I should start off lower for a few days. I have a call in to my dr. but just wondered if anyone has had any experiences with this.

replied: "I would definitely ease back on it. If you just jump back up to the higher level it can damage your heart!"

ghost replied: "Yeah it's not really a serious drug. Nobody need abuse it because it doesn't work that way. I take 150 mg. every morning. ;)"

I'm very depressed. I just took my first dose of Wellbutrin SR (100mg)? will I feel atleast a little better TODAY? I ear it takes 4 weeks to feel the full effect, but does that mean I'll feel like THIS for 4 WEEKS!! I'm tempted to go back to taking my percocet (witch I used to self medicate) to feel better unitl this Wellbutrin kicks in

angel_of_music_1690 replied: "honey thats a question you should ask your doctor"

Benjamin replied: "yes it does....it might even take longer to feel the full effects. i know how u feel. if u wanna talk....IM me or email me."

I luv E's replied: "Actually, everyone reacts to these drugs differently. I had to take Lexapro for anxiety with mild depression. For the first few days of taking it, I COULD feel myself feeling better, but it does take weeks to take their FULL effect. I think you will slowly start to feel better. If not, I would recommend changing meds."

redrumdrive replied: "I am on Wellbutrin as well, I started over a month ago and I still have not noticed any effect from the med. My doc told me to increase my dosage to 300 mg and it might take 2 weeks before I notice a change. I have been waiting for a change for 5 weeks now and nothing. It is very frustrating that you have to wait so long for an antidepressent to kick in. What is a person supposed to do in the meantime? I think doctors need to do a better job of addressing this. All I can say is hang in there."

ocpalmtree replied: "it does take awhile to kick in, but talking about what is bothering u can also help."

wellbutrin...when first starting this what is the normal doseage? I have taken this in the past and don't remember how it was started? I seem to remember that you started out with a 1/2 dose and worked up to the full dose? and also, does anyone know how high a dose can be prescribed, I mean if the dose originally prescribed loses it's effectiveness, can this med be increased and if so how high? It is the only drug that has worked for me in the past without awful side effects and I am going to begin taking it again, but have a new doctor now, so I was just wondering....thanks!

I Rufus replied: "1 150mg tablet 2 times per day is the recommended therapeutic level,"

Elle replied: "Yes, I believe you start with 150mg and then after 2 or three weeks you go to 300mg. However you do not have to. If 150 works that you should keep it at that. The reason for them not giving you the full 300mg is because your body needs to get used to it. There might be side effects like feeling woozy, like I had, and I had to build up to the max dose. But I agree with the product. I think it works miracles! And I got a good energy boost from it as well. Good luck with everything and its awesome that you brave enough to face the fact that you need it to help you over a "bump in the road"."

formerly_bob replied: "Wellbutrin has reshuffled the dosage options, offering only XL (24-hour extended release) and SR (12-hour slow release). The SR form is used mainly for smokers. Dosages for XL are typically started at 150 mg, and may be increased up to 450 mg/day. The XL meds are either 150 or 300 mg."

b00zebuzz replied: "in tabs, the startup dose is usually the lowest-like half of the 75 mg & gradually up to the 100 mg. usually taken twice a day 2 be effective. regularly. it may be up to 4 wks. to feel effects of wellbutrin.drugs effectsshouldlast about 9 mosafter 3 mos. regimen. since it effects different ppl differently, dose wise, only your dr can determine how fast & how much u can goto maximum dose like 100mg 2x a day."

Gem replied: "Yes, its 1/2 a dose for 2 to 3 weeks than full dose after that. . This allows your body & mind to absorb the medication slowly. Look at the expiration date and as for the strength for this med, is given according to your weight and severity of your problem. . Why dont you go see the doc again? If its been more than 2 yrs. dont start prescribing meds on your own just because you took it before. ** VERY IMPORTANT** Do not smoke at any time if you are using a nicotine product along with Wellbutrin. Too much nicotine can cause serious side effects. AND DO NOT do any drugs."

Wellbutrin - what should i do? Okay, I've been on Wellbutrin 150MG XL for a little over a week now. But I only filled a partial presription, due to the cost. Right now I don't know if I'd be able to afford filling the 150MG again for another week or so. But I have a entire full bottle of Wellbutrin 300MG XL.. (The Doctor wrote me a presription for 150MG for a week, and then move onto 300 after that. I accidentally filled the 300 so now im stuck with it). But then the Doc decided to keep me only on 150MG, cuz I told him I wanted to avoid side effects if possible... But now that I'm out of the 150MG, I still have that 300MG dose he gave me earlier ... What should I do? I can't call the doctors, closed all weekend... I don't want to miss 3 days in a row though, either... Should I just start on the 300MG? The docs idea was to have me go on it anyways... I just thought I'd rather be on a lower dose, to avoid side effects, so he said "okay we'll keep you on 150 then"... but now yeh...

michele replied: "You could start on the 300mg and see if you notice any side effects. Wellbutrin very infrequently results in any intolerable side effects. Alternatively, you could use a pill splitter to divide the 300mg tablets (skip this if it's in capsule form) into two, 150 mg pieces. Best of luck with your decision, ~M~"

-R- replied: "Actually you should not try splitting the pill, because you will destroy the layer that makes it XL."

Whats better Effexor XR or Wellbutrin XL? ? I am currently taking Effexor XR and have been on it for about 1 year now but off and on for over 7 years becuase I had 2 children over these years. I am up to 150mg a day at bed time (which is not that bad but it has been up to 350mg a day at one point years ago) I still suffer from depression (feel down, cry, feel hopeless and even think about suicide at least once a week) panic attacks and also have bad social anxiety that makes it hard to return to work or even go out into public etc. When I discuss with my Dr (family Dr not a therapist as my Dr will not give me a referral and pretty much just tells me I am depressed, take the meds and deal with it) that my depression is back full force she just ups the dose again and I am concerned becuase I feel that this med is just not working as well as it should and I do not want to be put on that high dose again when I know at some point I will just feel like I do now. I have read so many bad things about effexor XR and I have even started to develope twitching which I don't know is okay or not (thinking it is not from what I have read) I have considered asking the dr to switch me to Wellbutrin XL but am not sure if this will work better for the problems I have or if I should stick with the effexor and just ask if she can add a different anti depressant with my effexor. For all of you that has changed from Effexor to Wellbutrin, did you feel that Wellbutrin is a much better choice? Do you feel that I should switch or should I stick with the Effexor and add another anti depressant? I am not trying to self diagnose or treat but I feel that the dr just is not much help and if I go in there nowing what I feel and want maybe she will listen. Thanks for any info, help, advice or suggestions given

jim1624 replied: "That your doctor would keep you on effexor when you are "twiching" is alarming. I'd get a second medical opinion right away. You don't want to get Tardive Dyskenesia. I was on Wellbutrin when I was much younger. It worked for depression; did nothing for anxiety. It really slowed me intellectually, though. The only good solution for anxiety and depression is found in the bible. Check out this website:"

Bob replied: "I take effexor to check my anxiety, AND wellbutrin to keep me alert and more upbeat."

jandy replied: "Anti depressants affect dopamine, norepinephrine or serotonin. They are a combination of these inhibitors, Anti depressants interfere with REM sleep. Sometimes remeron is given at night for sleep. Wellbutrin is for atypical depression. Some depression is resistant to meds. Docs can also add thyroid hormone to supplement anti depression. Wellbutrin will make you stay awake for a long time and it's an appetite suppressant also an anti smoking med called Zyban. so, you won't feel hungry or even think about food. just stay hydrated. Get a new doc or a psychiatrist who has experience with these meds. Keep trying. Good luck and don't be so hard on yourself. Prozac is used for teenagers, not adults. Sometimes xanax or ativan may help with anxiety."

jackie replied: "I would feel very uncomfortable having a doctor that would not refer you to a therapist. Therapy is half the treatment of depression. I dont get it. What is her problem? I suffered from situational depression and my doctor gave me zoloft (sertraline). I gained like 15 plus pounds with no end in sight and it made me more depressed than ever. Then my doctor gave me Wellbutrin XL 150 ml. I lost all the weight plus five additional pounds and I seem much happier now. I am using the geric version of the wellbutrin. Please realize that all meds affect everyone differently. That is why it is important for you to get on the right med for U. Trial and error. I would venture to guess that the effexor is giving you side effects of shaking and that is never a good thing. Talk to your doctor. Explain the shaking and demand a referral for a therapist and change your meds and keep at that doctor until you begin to feel better. You deserve to feel good. This has gone on far to long. Be more pro active. Good luck. I wish you the very best."

canada_winnipeg_man replied: "Here's a great website where you can put all of your medications in and it will cross reference them for contraindications: C:\Users\Mindy\Desktop\Check My Meds from AIDSmeds_com.mht I did it and found that many of my meds should never have been prescribed!! I plugged in 2 meds and here is what came up: MONITOR CLOSELY: The use of bupropion is associated with a dose-related risk of seizures. The estimated incidence of seizures is approximately 0.1% at dosages up to 300 mg/day and 0.4% at dosages between 300 to 450 mg/day, but increases almost tenfold between 450 mg and 600 mg/day. The risk may also be increased during coadministration with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI antidepressants or anorectics), monoamine oxidase inhibitors, neuroleptic agents, central nervous system stimulants, opioids, tricyclic antidepressants, other tricyclic compounds (e.g., cyclobenzaprine, phenothiazines), systemic steroids, and/or any substance that can reduce the seizure threshold (e.g., carbapenems, cholinergic agents, fluoroquinolones, interferons, chloroquine, mefloquine, lindane, theophylline). These agents are often individually epileptogenic and may have additive effects when combined. MANAGEMENT: Extreme caution is advised if bupropion is administered with any substance that can reduce the seizure threshold, particularly in the elderly and in patients with a history of seizures or other risk factors for seizures (e.g., head trauma; brain tumor; severe hepatic cirrhosis; metabolic disorders; CNS infections; excessive use of alcohol or sedatives; addiction to opiates, cocaine, or stimulants; diabetes treated with oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin). Bupropion as well as concomitant medications should be initiated at the lower end of the dose range and titrated gradually if feasible. The total dose of bupropion should generally not exceed 450 mg/day (or 150 mg every other day in patients with severe hepatic cirrhosis). Bupropion should be discontinued and not restarted in patients who experience a seizure during treatment. Does it make sense for a doctor to up your dosage a huge amount? I am bi-polar and I have called my doctor three times. They never called back. That said, I was taking bupropion (Wellbutrin) a total of 200mg daily. I also take lithium three times a day 900mg I believe. I went back to the doctor this past Tuesday and she increased my bupropion to 400mg. Its extended release. The reason I'm annoyed is because I am nauseous all day. I felt bad after the first day I had the full dose. I've been all over WebMD but it only says half the medicine in America could cause you to be nauseous. So, was this jump in mg to blame? And is this too much bupropion to be on? I thought the highest dose was 350mg? Just for clarification, I'm taking Bupropion HCL ER. 200mg. One morning, one night. I could easily call the dr or pharmacy again, but I was hoping I could hear from people who've might have also had an increase in dosage. I want to know if it made them feel sick, too.

LadyLynn replied: "Sweetie, Call the Pharmacist immediately. They are SO kind, smart, and helpful, and meds are their "thing!" The pharmacist will guide you. I promise! Tell him/her exactly what you wrote in your question. If your pharmacist is closed now, look up "Pharmacies" in the Yellow Pages. Find an ad for a 24-hour pharmacy. Bless you and good luck! :)"

Medicine Woman replied: "Sounds like you need to talk to your Dr. again. This time make an appointment. They have so many patients they don't really know who you are unless they see you and have your chart in front of them."

Astro82 replied: "300mg per day is the average dosage someone recieves but dosages have been known to go as high as 600mg. Any dosage that exceeds 450mg per day starts to become dangerous as it increases your chances of having a seizure. The nausea you are suffering from is due to an increase in your increased bupropion med"

doublejay38 replied: "Well, first of all...is the release of the Bupropion extended or sustained? It matters to whether or not the original prescription was written for Wellbutrin XL (extended release) or Wellbutrin SR (sustained release) as to what dosage is appropriate. Bupropion is the active ingredient in both Wellbutrin XL and Wellbutrin SR. Wellbutrin XL comes in two strengths: 150mg and 300mg. Wellbutrin XL is a once daily dose. Taking more than 450mg a day increases the chance of serious side effects. Wellbutrin SR comes in three strengths: 100mg, 150mg, and 200mg. The recommended maximum daily dose of Wellbutrin SR is 400mg, taken in TWO doses of 200mg each. It seems that you are taking Bupropion HCL in the sustained release formula since you said she doubled your dose from 200mg up to 400mg. If you had been taking Bupropion HCL in the extended release formula, you would have started out on 150mg and would have been doubled to 300mg. Here are the complete prescribing guides for both:"

I need help controling anxiety and depression while I am pregnant.? I am 19 weeks pregnant and went off Effexor at near the beginning of my pregnancy. I am struggling right now. Mainly with anxiety. I don't feel safe or secure unless I am with my husband. I get upset and nervous when he goes to bed before me and I have to be alone. I am obsessing over sex with him. The doctor doesn't want me on anything, but if I NEEDED to be on something he wanted that to be Zoloft. I filled the prescription and took 1 pill. I am scared that it won't work and I'll end up feeling worse than before. He stated that this was probably the only option he would give me so its all or nothing. When we were trying to get pregnant they switched me to Wellbutrin. It was awful. My anxiety was through the roof. Ever since then I think about things obsessively. It was better while I was on my full dose of Effexor. I just don't know what to do here. I want what is best for the baby, but some days I don't know if I will make it. Pooh Bear-I was on Effexor up until the 10-12th week. Since then I have been on nothing. Last night I couldn't keep my heart from beating so fast and the super nervous stomach was horrible. I started Zoloft 2 days ago. I pray I see some improvement very soon with the anxiety, obsessive thinking, and depression. I go to see a thereapist today, but I'm not sure how that will help since it's my thoughts and anxiety. I just don't want it to get worse, only better.

i hate undies! replied: "i'd suggest a theripast."

S B replied: "there are tiers in which doctors will prescibe meds and Effexor may be one that you can not take with expecting and Zoloft is one that is safe. It takes about 7 days for those types of meds to take a full affect on how they will work. Your in a delicate situation with expecting. Follow your doctors advice and if It doesnt work after a week or two call your doctor again. Good LucK!!!"

Sleepy Gee replied: "I would suggest trying some CBT (Cognitive-Behavior Therapy) techniques, either with a therapist, or by using a book. Two good CBT books are The Feeling Good Handbook and The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook. CBT is very effective at helping people manage anxiety, and depression as well. In addition, if your doctor says it's ok, try to exercise a little every day. Exercise is proven to help boost serotonin levels naturally, which improves your mood without medication."

poohbear doesn't give a F**K replied: "OMG girl, i so know what you are going through! Were you on any med before you got pregnant? if so what kind? I can help you, i know it! i had the worse pregnancy due to panic, anxiety and depression. I had such horrible bouts of panic, sometimes the panic attack would last more than 30 hours. I wanted to die and i actually thought about it often.....which was something that i had never experienced before pregnancy ADDED: In the beginning of my pregnancy, they put me on Prozac, which i hated. it did nothing for me and for some reason i believed it made thing worse. but i now know it didn't. it was all in my head. A LOT was in my head. It was weird! I was weird at that time...lol. But my doctor ended up sending me to a psycho therapist because my doc wanted me on paxil, but needed a therapist to prescribe it. so i was sent to mental health....lol. and the therapist had me sign all kinds of papers and put me on paxil. My panic, anxiety, and depression was so bad, i know i would have ended up losing my baby if someone hadn't intervened. I am so thankful that someone stuck their neck out for me, because now i have a beautiful healthy baby girl.... Just be happy your not as bad off as i was...lol. i got way out their during pregnancy. It was weird. i never would have thought that something like that could happen to me..."

Transition from generic to name-brand antidepressant? I've tried a few different antidepressants, finally settling on Wellbutrin. I have been taking this the last 2 years in the generic form, bupropion. This was costing me $50/month, when it was brought to my attention that I might qualify for patient assistance through the drug company, GlaxoSmithKline. Turns out I do qualify, so I recently received some of the real name-brand Wellbutrin in the mail. I pretty much just stopped taking the bupropion and started taking the Wellbutrin at the same dose. I know it's usually best to gradually work in a new antidepressant while phasing out the other one, but I ran out of bupropion the same time the real stuff arrived and couldn't afford to buy more. It's been about 5 days since I started the Wellbutrin, and I'm feeling a little "dip" in mood, energy etc. Nothing too serious but definitely a slight return of depressive symptoms. This is surprising because I thought the generic bupropion was chemically identical to the Wellbutrin, but I'm experiencing the same mild return of symptoms that I experienced when transitioning between two different drugs, like Zoloft to Wellbutrin. Are the generic and name-brand forms of Wellbutrin different in some way, so that it might take some time for the Wellbutrin to reach full effect? Or would be symptoms be coming from somewhere else?

Gabe replied: "They are different usually in times they take to effect the patient, how long the effects last, etc. You should really talk to your doctor about this. You may need a lower or higher dose of the medicine since you changed it, and you might need to take it more often or less often. Taking them like you think you need could cause more problems."

butterfly red replied: "Basically the drug is the same. The name is by manufacture. The brand name is the one that comes out first and when the patent on the name runs out, the companies put out the generic version. Most insurance companies pay for generic but if you can get brand that is better. Make sure you take it at the same time everyday. I take my antidepressant at night because of drowsiness. I work in a hospital pharmacy. We go between brand and generic all the time, depends on what the cost is."

Margie M replied: "May I suggest you go to a teaching hospital (usually found in big cities) and let them review your medical history. I can almost guarantee that you will not get any sort of diagnois on this site because doctors can be sued for malpractice for giving you any advice on such a hot question. Also, you have no idea if the person giving you advice is a doctor or not and may just be someone who has been looking all your symptoms up on WebMD and are doctor wanna-be's. Your best bet is to go to a teaching hospital. I wish you all the best and I hope your situations can be resolved so that you can enjoy life."

MishMash replied: "First of all : Margie M is right you just don't know who is answering your questions; but I am for real - a nurse who has worked in a big city hospital and that is exactly where you will get the best care ! I also have a neurological condition like MS for which I am on many medications but I also take supplements : *Omega 3 fish oils - the lining on the nerves is made up of the same sort of stuff as Omega 3 Oils. Take as supplements and/or eat oily fish - tuna, mackerel, salmon, olive oil, flaxseeds/oil, sunflower seeds. It will lower your cholesterol as it is 'good fats' and prevent loss of myelin from nerves and keep your heart and mucous membranes healthy. Helps with any sort of depression. *Magnesium tablets - helps your nerves to send messages; reduces spasm and twitches in muscles; relaxes your for sleep. Also found in almonds, brazil nuts and dates etc. Helps with any sort of depression. *Have oat porridge for breakfast with prunes. This is an excellent source of protein to build strong muscles and complex carbohydrates. The prunes will keep you regular and this will help you to lose weight. Protein is needed to make neurotransmitters of which dopamine is one, something that people with depression have in low supply. *Eat citrus fruit especially oranges as they contain a nutrient called Rutin which helps to keep small blood vessels healthy and strong - important for everyone especially diabetics. *Drink 8 glasses of water a day; this will help with getting all the nasties out of your body. *Try to get to sleep around 9 pm as the amounts of hours sleep one gets BEFORE midnight is the time that the body makes serotonin which is the happy neurotransmitter. To jig your body into going to bed earlier get up earlier at 6 am. Even though you may be still tired GET UP and on with the day as this is the best way to get into a regular sleep pattern. I wish you all the best."

Is this obsessive behavior? I have severe depression and anxiety. I'm seeing a therapist and a psychiatrist. I'm on the max dose of wellbutrin and neurotin. and i just started taking the normal dose (25mg?) of Prestiq. I'm about to go back to school and i feel very anxious about it. but here is what ive been doing: -Looking online for hours on "how to make yourself sick". -watching full disturbing autopsy videos. -checking symptoms at least 4 times a week on WebMd -i have thoughts that if i get an infection, to let it spread and get serious. then i can get out of school. -share drinks with people who are sick on 'accident'. -i constantly get my anxiety stomach and headaches. im 17, a senior in high school but at a boarding school/college. im a musician (viola) in a strict conservatory. its VERY stressful. is this behavior obsessive? what should i do? im already working with my therapist on it, but because im away at school (and have no time to see a councelor there..nojoke.) i cant see a therapist weekly like im used to.

Crystal K replied: "If you are worried about yourself maybe you can go see a doctor. The doctor may tell you if there is something wrong, and help you."

cutie pie replied: "Yes, this is obsessive. I'm sorry that you are that anxious about school. if I were you, I would just try my best to calm down and be confident."

lmmmrw1 replied: "Sounds to me like you have to get out of that school. You hate it there. But, the doctors are trying to drug you up to help you get through it. I'd think of dropping out or transferring to a public school or taking the GED just to get a high school diploma. You need to take control of your life; I think others are putting you through a difficult time. Taking control will be scary, but you'll feel a lot better and perhaps not need those drugs. I don't think your behavior is obsessive. I think you're miserable. If you can't get out right now, just remember that this period will pass in a few months, once you graduate or reach an age when you can make decisions for yourself, so hang on."

Stephanie C replied: "I think you have more problems than anyone on this site can help u with!!! You need to seek different help..those med's your on obviously aren't working sweety!!! I really don't know what to say..check in to a mental health facility to be honest.. what about your parents they don't help u????"

angi71 replied: "I would never normally condone dropping out of a school but when it is so apparently affecting your health this way, I would say to: stop, take a deep breath and think about what YOU want. Even if it means upsetting other people. WHAT DO YOU NEED? You can't go on like this and I would hope that the people around you who love you wouldn't want you to feel this way. It all comes down to you taking the time to figure out what it is you really want to do with your life right now. I find that if you simplify, you feel much much better."
