Prozac Allergies Posts in Questions
How long do antihistamines/painkillers/Prozac stay in one's system b4 a drug test? I have to have a drug test day after tomorrow, early in the morning. I take Prozac every morning. I also have allergies and sinus problems which call for antihistamines and painkillers. If I took any of the aforementioned medications 24 hours or more before the drug test, will they show up in the results? Or will I have to tough it out for two whole days?

Scott P replied: "If this is a drug test to test for illeal drugs then they won't detect prozac or antihistamines so you should be able to take them the day of and still be fine. I have taken drug test before on perscription hydrocodine and still not had any questions about it. generally by rule of thumb drugs that are taken PO or Per Oral stay in somones system depent on metobolism 24 to 48 hours."

firemedicgm replied: "Antihistamines will not show up on a routine drug test. They are not a drug of abuse. Painkillers will only show up if they are opioids, like hydrocodone, oxycodone, oxycontin, etc. Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Advil (ibuprofen) will not show up. If you are taking OTC pain meds, you're ok. Prozac, I believe, is a class of drug that again will not show up on a routine urine drug screen. Even if any of these do show up, just let your employer know about them. He can't penalize you for taking meds prescribed by your physician. The only concern would be if you were taking prescription pain meds - some jobs (driving, operating machinery, etc.) would be unsafe while taking these meds."

lov_rome replied: "If you have questions regarding how long these drugs stay in your system, call your pharmacy or your doctor. More often than not, they are looking for the obvious illicit drugs: marajuana, etc. I am willing to bet if you first get a note from your doctor, just in case, you will protect yourself from the issue of "failing" a drug test because you regularly take Prozac and medicationa for allergies."

Can allergies be passed from parent to child? My mom and I both have Depression. She was alergic to Prozac, and I started it 3 weeks ago. Right now I am breaking out in a blotchy red rash on my hips, butt, back, stomach, and armpits. It itches. I really hope it's not the Prozac what do you think?

Ha M replied: "Yes, they can be passed from parent to child, genetically."

Gary B replied: "Yes. The tendency to be allergic can be passed genetically. But not always. If the parent and child are in CLOSe contact, sometimes the "antibodies" that make a person allergic can be passed from person to person, like through kissing, even simple mother/daughter kisses. HOWEVER, in you case it is much more likely that you simply do n ot handle the medicine well. That is a MUCH more common problem."

Can I take Tylenol cold and sinus if I'm taking Prozac? Okay I asked this already in another category but no one answered it so Ill try here.I have really bad allergies and it messing with my sinuses, so I bought some Tylenol Sinus and congestion pain and on the back it says do not take if you are taking a MAOI drug and it says certain drugs for depression, so is Prozac and MAOI drug? I don't think it is but I just want to make sure.

jane doe replied: "The best thing to do is call your pharmacy. But, Prozac is an SSRI, not an MAOI, so I'd say it's OK. I'm on Lexapro which is an SSRI and I've heard not to take it with sinus stuff, but this site ,,00.html says it's ok."

Laura L replied: "My husband uses this to keep from getting bronchitis, and I use to to cure sinus infections. THere are many kinds of bacteria that live in the sinuses, and this gets rid of all the bad ones!.This is the only thing that really helped me --- my Dr. told me about a sinus wash that will kill bacteria. you need distilled water sea salt liquid chlorophyll and colloidal silver from the health food store. in a glass mix 1/4 cup water with a pinch of salt and heat to body temperature. add 5 drops each silver and chlorophyll and mix. using a large dropper (like one used for infant medication) drop 2 full droppersfull into one side of the nose while laying down. Turn the head and let it drain out the other nostril. Be sure to have paper towels handy. The silver kills the bacteria and there are several hundred kind that can live in the sinus cavities and anti biotics don't get rid of them all. Do this twice a day for a week, mixing up the mixture fresh each time. Then do it once a week for maintenance. There is nothing in this that will hurt you, and it cured me. I do not have to take claritin, or antibiotics anymore. best wishes"

the effects of prozac on a baby??? i have just asked a question about my 1 year old son with his behaviour probs, he also has milk and soya allergies. I was put on prozac at 34 wks pregnant do u think this could relate to any of this as with our daughter who i never had prozac with she has had no probs?

Tracey S replied: "Prozac is considered fairly safe in pregnancy. I would suspect it's just a coincidence."

megane replied: "I do not think it has any connection. Somethings are never explained but more likely connections would be to family history of allergies, not exclusively breastfeeding or early weaning."

Any ideas on how to stop my cat from removing his hair? I'm new to this site and this is my first question-although I'm enjoying contributing to the answers! I've got a 8-9 year old Siamese mix cat, male, neutered. For about 2 years, he's been licking out his own hair. He licks constantly-sometimes so hard you can hear his tongue rasping over his skin from across the room. He'll also lick the other cats when they let him, and us-which we don't let him because it's so hard that it hurts! He's been tested for food allergies and common household allergens- all negative. I've tried 8 different brands of premium food and went back to the original brand because nothing had an effect. I tried Bitter Apple on his body- he licked it off. I tried natural ingredients like garlic and Brewer's yeast additives to moisturize his skin- no effect. The vet thinks it's a neurotic behavior and wants to put him on Prozac- but as a last resort- I don't like the idea. Any suggestions are appreciated- he looks like a poodle with a bad shave job! Wow! Thanks for the quick answers! Keep 'em coming! There don't appear to be any stressors involved with the other cats except for the daily race to the food bowl- perhaps I will try separating them to feed them. The dog doesn't bother him, he loves the dog. The animals aren't left alone for more than 4 hours a day so they get lots of human interaction. The house is pretty big- 1300 sq foot with only 2 people in it, so the cats get plenty of excercise. They are strictly indoor cats, though...does anyone think an increase of sunshine would help his skin? I could allow more access to a screened in porch... Kris L- have you tried fatty oils or lipids in place of butter? Someone I asked this question to at work recommended cod liver oil...any thoughts? I appreciate all the advice!

Aadil Prabhakar replied: "Well do one thing, bathe himup with shamoo and then put coconut oil on his body and keep it so for 2-3 hours, then wash the oil off. Try it"

Roxy replied: "His licking may be caused by stress. My cat did the same thing when we moved. The vet said he was nervous which caused a lot of stress. Try to figure out if he has experienced any changes."

T-MAC replied: "I have two cats and this is what cats do, thats how they clean themselves but the best thing for you to do is to get hairball food becuase by the cat licking his hair he is swallowing it and it causes hairball and first the cat will start to spit the hairballs up which is a good thing but if it's too much the sweetie can die..so get some food that control hairballs.."

Kris L replied: "Try giving your cat a 'pat of butter' to eat ... he's not getting enough 'fat' in his diet, and the 'obsessive licking' is because his skin is 'drying out and painful' ... if your cat won't eat the butter, then try to give him some other kind of 'edible oil or fat' ... and you really need to 'give him lots of extra fat' for the first month (or until he stops licking and starts to grow hair to fill in the spots he's licked off) ... but after he 'looks good' again you should 'cut back slowly' until he starts trying to lick it all out again, then add a 'tablespoon' daily to what you've been giving him and give him that much EVERY DAY. DO NOT LET YOU VET PUT YOUR CAT ON PROZAC ... cats can't get 'depression' in the way humans do, and even if they did the 'treatment' would be 'very different' than it is for humans, and Prozac is a 'serotonin reuptake inhibitor' for HUMANS who are 'much larger and heavier' than any cat. If I were you, I'd look for a 'new and BETTER vet,' too, because your VET needs to take some good psychiatric meds if he thinks that Prozac would help a 'cat' to stop licking ... just give your poor cat a 'little bit extra fat' and he'll be 'good looking' a lot faster ... and while you may need to put him on a 'reduced calorie' cat food because he's getting fat, you are going to have to keep this 'extra fat' in his diet if you want him to 'look good and healthy' ..."

lozroz replied: "Hi Have you checked to see if your cat has an alergy brcause that would make them itch all the time. As your cat licks others then there could be a problem on the tounge. Have you tried putting a cone round its neck to stop the licking incase it has become a habit. Good luck"

Laura W replied: "I've got a netered male purebred siamese who does the same thing, if not to such an extreme. Anytime he has been badly stressed or upset (eg, a visit to the vet's office or a trip in the car which he, as a pampered indoor kitty, hates) he will start to wash, wash until he has a bald belly and bald spots on his legs and tail. Look around your home environment for things that could be stressful for your cat (loud noises? too many other cats? people being gone all day and no one to keep him company?) If you find something that's stressing him out (or you think might be), remove it and see if the behavior improves. Is he a 100% indoor cat? If there is a place where he can be outside, but safely supervised and contained, maybe brief, controlled outdoor excursions could releive his stress. If these stress-reducers don't work, I'd try something like one of those collars that keeps animals from licking a wound. By having him wear it a while, it might help break the habit of over-grooming. Ask the vet for other suggestions, or other stressful things to watch out for. If these fail, then as extreme as it sounds, maybe kitty prozac will be necessary."

What antidepressants are compatible if i have microscopic colitis? I have allergies to corn, gluten, dairy, and soy. I need an anti-depressant (Prozac works but it contains corn) really badly. Please help if you can. Thanks!

sallyanne kikosicki replied: "you can try paxil or librax. i don't know what the ingredients are but look it up on the web. i hope that helps!"

Whats the name of a doctor that does everything? I'm looking for a doctor who can do these things: Womens checkup, such as papsmears, prescribe birth control, ect.. Check for sinuses, allergies, ear infections. Can prescribe a medication for some kind of depression such as prozac. Is there a name for a doctor who does all of these things and also more? Or do you go to different doctors for all different things? How do you go about finding a doctor to help you with most of these certain things?

tsoto_soto replied: "A general Practitioner (GP) can do all of those except the Women's checkeup. Only OB/GYNs do that."

blaze23 replied: "General Practitioner, and YES they do women's check ups such as pap smears and they even deliver babies. You don't have to see a psychiatrist for depression meds they can prescribe those too."

damiana112 replied: "Actually many General Practitioners can do women's exams."

Sandman44 replied: "Different doctors. A GP or General Practitioner does a variety of diagnosis and usually family care. Although most can do PAP smears and the like. An Obstetrician Gynecologist or OBGYN deals specifically with female related care as well as pregnancy issues and birth control. Sinus allergies, etc. see an ENT ear nose and throat specialist. Your Gen Practitioner can prescribe many things or refer you to someone that deals with your specific needs. For depression, you'll need to see a psychiatrist. They can get you situated on the right medication for your particular needs. It may take some time depending on how severe your depression is. So be patient. Try: You can click on individual care. Look in your local yellow pages under the blue section in the front for your county that you live in. They will list the counties and health care clinics and possibly providers in that county. I see a county clinic doctor for GP things. Good luck. hope this helps."

MyA replied: "try going to either a practitioner nurse or a physician assistant...they usually take care of all of that and any other questions that you will have. Good Luck!!"

Can prozac cause chronic migraines? I started with a pretty stressful job back in sept 07. Back in march of this year i had a panic attack, my GERD (acid reflux) got worse as well. Acid constantly got up in my esophogus and burned in my chest, neck, and throat. They said it was anxiety, put me on zanax. A few weeks into the low dosage of about 0.25mg twice a day from what i recall, i felt sick, started feeling dizzy, migraines started more frequently. I stopped taking it and for the last 3-4 weeks have been on prozac. Ive seen a neurologist (just gave me topamax), gastrologist,(getting a upper scope in a week), and primary doctor for which just gave me migraine (balbutal) meds, ibprofiin, and nasal spray, thinking it could be allergies as well. All this time ive had the dry mouth, migraines, fatigue (ive lost about 14 pounds sense march), and i dont know what to do. This migraine has been chronic as far back as i remember taking anxiety pills. Could me just not taking prozac anymore solve my problem? Thank you. also, can i just stop taking it or should i gradually stop taking this pill? I dont want anymore harm done. thx i bring this up because before taking any anxiety meds, i never had a migraine, this bad, everyday. I found this link with someone with the same problem. >
Just Google It replied: "Prozac isn't know to cause migraines and you should never go off any anti-depression without a doctor's supervision and you must taper them or else you'll go insane! Kidding about the insane part."

Sara M replied: "When I was on prozac it really didn't take effect until a month and a half after I started taking it. I don't think that the prozac would cause you to have chronic migraines though. And as for stopping it, you haven't been on it that long for it to have a full effect on you. if you were taking it for a while yeah you should come off of it gradually...but I don't see why you should just couldn't stop now. You should talk to your doctor and ask him what might be causing your migraines."

DeltaQueen replied: "HI there, let me start by saying that you should never come off of anti depressants with out being under a doctors watch. It is very dangerous and you can really have bad reactions. I almost lost my son, because he did it alone. (please if you don't listen to another piece of advice you get, please, please take this one) The symptoms that you describe such as dry mouth, fatigue and weight loss certainly could be related to Prozac, I'm not sure about migraines though, I'm sorry. It seems that your doctor would have mentioned it though. There are other anti depressant that they can try you on. It is very common to have to try 2 or 3 different ones until you find the one that is right for you and your body chemistry. I found mine on the 3rd try and it was Zoloft. I can safely say it saved my life!! Have you tryed the topamax for your headaches yet?? It is A-1 for migraines, so before you start readjusting your anti depressants I would definetly give the topamax a try. I urge you to google topamax before taking it though and read the side effects, there are many. You many not have any effects at all, but its best you know what to look for. Also.....nasal spray, give me hella headaches, so I don't know how long you have been using it, but you might think about the timing there. I hope you start to feel bette soon!! I wish you luck, peace and happiness!"
