Lithium Carbonate Information in Q&A
When lithium carbonate solid is placed in water, it dissociates. What is the balanced chemical equation for it? If there is a solution of lithium carbonate of 0.8555 M and you need 3.0L of 0.25 M lithium carbonate solution for a lab, how much of the solution would you need to measure before diluting it? What is the concentration of the lithium ion in the 0.25 M lithium carbonate solution? Answer whichever ones you can please. Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Dr.A replied: "Li2CO3 = 2 Li+ + CO32- 0.25 x 3.0 = 0.8555 V V=0.877 L 0.25 x 2 = 0.50 M"

Does Lithium Carbonate cause a Parkinson's favoring to one side and by ceasing the medication will it go away? Have Parkinson's symptoms and take lithium carbonate. These symptoms started about three months ago and I have been taking lithium for many years. Just have an idea this is the cause.

Mags replied: "It is not surprising that the lithium carbonate (Eskalith - Carbolith, in Canada) is causing parkinsonian symptoms. In order to counteract the manic stages, this medication often causes opposite reactions. Some of the PD-like symptoms include muscle weakness, drowsiness, lack of coordination, tremor twitching, urinary frequency, dystonia, blurred vision, nystagmus, slowed cognitive function, cogwheel rigidity, sexual dysfunction among others. Because you have been taking lithium carbonate for several years, you should discuss this with your doctor. You can request that your serum lithium concentration levels be checked, The symptoms usually occur at the higher concentrations although tremor has been known to occur at lower levels. I just found this abstract (hope the link works) which you should probably read - it isn't complete but it does support getting tested. It could be that you will need to reduce your dosage although in some cases stopping the medication (for a while at least) is recommended. As a matter of fact, if the lithium carbonate is not causing the symptoms, it will be much easier for a neurologist to begin diagnosing the problem. You might want to keep a journal of the exact symptoms, when they occur for discussion with your doctor. Best wishes"

Where can I purchase LITHIUM CARBONATE in powder form? I need to know where I can buy lithium carbonate powder, i want to take it as a supplement ? I need to know where I can buy lithium carbonate powder, i want to take it as a supplement ?

Crue-K replied: "Lithium Carbonate can't be used as a supplement, what you are referring to is Lithium Orotate. You don't want to take the wrong one. Lithium Orotate is the one that can be used a dietry supplement. "

silent assasin replied: "From medical store. But I think you need to ask your doctor first!"

What is the solubility product for lithium carbonate if 1.35 grams of Li2CO3 dissolve in? Lithium salts, such as lithium carbonate, are used to treat manic-depressives. What is the solubility product for lithium carbonate if 1.35 grams of Li2CO3 dissolve in 100 mL of water?

Dr.A replied: "The equilibrium for the saturated solution is Li2CO3 (s) <----> 2 Li (aq) + CO32- (aq) and the equilibrium condition is given by Ksp = [Li+]^2 [CO32-] moles Li2CO3 = 1.35 g/ 73.891 g/mol=0.0183 concentration of dissolved Li2CO3 = 0.0183 mol/ 0.100 L= 0.183 M [Li+] = 2 x 0.183=0.366 M [CO32-]= 0.183 M Ksp = (0.366)^2 ( 0.183)=2.45 x 10^-2"

What are the side effects from smoking marijuana while on Lithium Carbonate? I was wondering what would happen if I smoked weed while taking Lithium Carbonate for Asberger's Syndrome. I also take Risperdal for the same reason. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. One love.

Help replied: "you'll die if you don't share your bud with me."

sherpa-man replied: "getting high"

i am sofa king high replied: "put the 'dro in the air. 420 for life :P"

How long do you take lithium carbonate? I live in northern Thailand, away from proper healthcare. I'm on lithium carbonate now. Our local psychiatric hospital would be considered a breach in human rights and the doctors arent that good or care too much about me. English skills are non-existent. so i'm curious, how long do i have to take it? can i stop at some point?

butterfly02012001 replied: "if you were given lithium for bipolar disorder then you will need to take the meds for the rest of your life ( not necessarily Lithium but this med does seem to work the best) stopping your medicines is inadvisable as it may and probably will send you out of control. keep hoping for a medical breakthru(thats what i am doing)"

****Lithium Carbonate****? I take it for bipolar and I was wondering what would happen if I smoked it? Would it work the way its supposed to? Would it hurt my lungs or would it be like smoking any other substance?

rockinnnsteady replied: "i wouldnt try it if i were you"

John D replied: "Smoking lithium carbonate.. Its not even that bad, if you get symptoms its treated with fresh air. Not that I condone smoking lithium carbonate. Cough. Headache. Nausea. Sore throat. "

I have been taking lithium carbonate for almost 11 years now and have had ALOT of tooth decay. Is this due to? the lithium carbonate? What reaction does it have to teeth that causes the decay?

Heley replied: "Unfortunately, Lithium Carbonate does have a side effect of tooth decay. My family member (age 49) had been on Lithium for the past 14 years. We are in the process of obtaining dentures for her. Pros however; no extreme manic episodes during that period."

brown eyes replied: "The adverse reactions of having lithium carbonate are dizziness, drowsiness, headache, tremor, tics, EEG changes, ataxia, choreoathetotic movements, abnormal tongue movements, extrapyramidal reactions, cogwheel rigidity, blackout spells, psychomotor retardation, slow mental functioning, slurred speech, startled response, restlessness, agitation, confusion, hallucinations, poor memory, worsening of organic brain syndrome, stupor, coma, epileptiform seizures while an increase in dental decay happens when sugars in food and drinks react with the bacteria in plaque, forming acids. Every time you eat or drink anything containing sugars, the bacteria reacts with it to form acid. These acids attack the teeth and start to dissolve the enamel. The attacks can last for an hour after eating or drinking, before the natural salts in your saliva cause the enamel to remineralise and harden again. Its not just sugars that are harmful: other types of carbohydrate foods and drinks react with plaque and form acid. (These are the fermentable carbohydrates such as the hidden sugars that can be added to processed food, natural sugars like those found in fruit, and cooked starches.) Snacking on sugary or acidic foods and drinks can increase the risk of decay, as the teeth come under constant attack and do not have time to recover. It is therefore important not to keep snacking on sugary foods or sipping sugary drinks throughout the day. Personally i don't think that the taking of Lithium carbonate is the reponsible of your dental decay"

Does Lithium Aspartate work in the same way as Lithium carbonate? Lithium Aspartate is sold as a legal "non medical" mineral supplement. I'm just wondering if you could treat someone with Lithium Aspartate for bi polar without having to pay for expensive prescriptions, since Lithium Aspartate is relatively cheaper than most of the brand name drugs. Also studies have shown that Lithium seems to increase brain mass, could you get this effect from Lithium Aspartate?

A to the T replied: "no aspartate uses aspartate and carbonate uses carbonate"

Dr Dave P replied: "Are you sure that the price paid is that much cheaper? You'd better figure in for the molecular weight difference detween aspartate and carbonate in your calculation, and see if this is a good deal or not!"

Yohana D replied: "Lithium Carbonate is just as cheap. Studies also shown that taking fish oil also help the Lithium when used for bi-polar. I believe that Lithium Aspartate is used for things like fatigue and metabolism."

What's the balanced equation for the reaction between solutions of lithium carbonate and nitric acid? What class of a reaction is this?

Sciman replied: "Li2CO3 + 2HNO3 -> 2LiNO3 + H20 + CO2 Acid - base neutralization reaction."
