Can I find a list of foods to avoid while taking Coumadin? I would like to have a list of foods to avoid while taking my blood thinner Coumadin
. replied: "Coumadin is a brand name for the prescription blood thinner Warfarin. This medication, when recommended by physicians, is used for patients who have had a history of heart attack, stroke or blood clots in veins and arteries to help avoid recurrence. When taking any prescription medication, certain foods and vitamins have counter effects with the medication which will render it useless or actually make it dangerous. For example, there are certain foods which should be avoided while taking Coumadin because they contain a large amount of vitamin K, which aids in blood clotting, thereby counteracting the intended effects of the medication.
Foods to Avoid
Foods high in vitamin K should be avoided if you're on Coumadin. Those foods include liver, kale, spinach, turnip greens, spinach, Brussels sprouts, collards, swiss chard, parsley, cranberries, mustard greens and most leafy green vegetables. If unable to avoid these items in the diet, be sure to work closely with your doctor to determine safe amounts to eat in conjunction with your medication dosage. Please remember that many of these foods contain beneficial nutrients also, which contribute to overall good health, therefore your normal diet should be discussed with your doctor prior to beginning your Coumadin regimen, and he can recommend any dietary adjustments necessary.
Other Things to Avoid Drinking or Putting into Your Body
In addition to avoiding certain foods, you should also avoid drinking alcohol which can increase the occurrence and severity of certain side effects of Coumadin. Cigarettes and chewing tobacco are also to be avoided while taking Coumadin, as tobacco alters the way Coumadin interacts with the body and can reduce the blood thinning effects.
Over the Counter Medications and Coumadin
Your doctor and pharmacist will also warn of interactions with other over the counter medications while on Coumadin. Do not take aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) such as Celebrex, Motrin, Advil, Aleve and many others. These medications can cause internal bleeding in the stomach and intestines of taken in combination with Coumadin. As always, check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medication while on a prescription drug.
In many cases, people on a routine regimen of prescription medication will suddenly get very enthusiastic about becoming more conscious of their health, and begin making lifestyle changes without the knowledge of their physician that can counteract some of the effects of

As always, work closely with your doctor when taking any medication or engaging in any treatment for medical conditions. Do not assume that taking any over the counter medications or herbal remedies are safe, just because they do not require prescription, when taking other prescription medications."

Nothing...ok...eat a normal diet and adjust your Coumadin to suit your regular diet otherwise you will spend the rest of your days chasing your tail. There is no need to eat a special diet while on Anti coagulation therapy. Think of all the excellent viatmins and minerals you could miss out on not to mention your favourite foods that you may have to give up. Anyone who tells you to not eat Vit. K foods needs to update their knowledge. Eat you regular diet and that way you can adjust your level of warfarin to suit and you are less likely to have wild swings and an unstable INR.
Here is a very informative website by one of the US"s leading Warfarin educators

what foods to avoid while on coumadin? I am looking for a list of foods that you should avoid eating while taking the drug Coumadin or Warfarin
can you please tell where I can find such a list
thank you
mg1athecat replied: "You want to limit your consumption of foods rich in Vitamin K, e.g. spinach, etc. But your INR should be monitored regularly irrespective of what you're eating or avoiding."
xiaohuli42 replied: "The main one I can think of is concentrated grapefruit juice. People like to drink that as part of dieting, but it inhibits the metabolism of warfarin in the liver. Another one to avoid is St. John's wort, which increases the metabolism of warfarin. A small amount of alcohol increases warfarin's effects, but for alcoholics, the effects are decreased because the liver makes extra enzyme to try to get rid of all the alcohol.
There are others if you want to read about them:

lani s replied: "For the reason that Coumadin works by preventing the formation of clotting factors that are dependent on the ingestion of vitamin K, HIGH INTAKE of foods with high Vitamin K content could weaken the effect of coumadin. Therefore intake of foods that are high in vitamin K should be avoided in large quantities, but not altogether. REMEMBER that you need to eat a balanced diet even when you are in coumadin so it means you need not to avoid all the foods that has Vitamin K but you need to LIMIT HIGH INTAKE of those. High in vitamin K can decrease the effect of coumadin but on the other hand, lowering your vitamin K intake can increase its effect. You then should try to eat a normal, balanced diet keeping the amount of vitamin K the same everyday.
Example of foods with large amounts of Vitamin K that high intake should be avoided are as follows:
>>Dark green leafy foods and vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, parsley, turnips green, mustard green, brussels sprouts, horse radish, Swiss chard, coriander, collard green, kale, cabbage, etc.
>>Liver
>>Some legumes and vegetable oils
In addition, you have to AVOID intake of cranberries, cranberry juice, or cranberry herbal products. Avoid drinking alcohol too. Those can increase the effects of coumadin and can cause bleeding problems .
Chewing tobacco can also alter the effects of Coumadin.
As always, it is important to talk to your doctor about the changes of the amount of those foods in your diet.Checking your "INR" is also very important while you are on coumadin."
Does anyone know what foods you need to avoid while on Coumadin, blood thinner? I just recently had a PE after surgery. Now I need to be on Coumadin for at least 6 months. I know not to eat Spinach or Broccoli (which are my favorite veggies...UGH!)...but wasn't told about much else. So if you know of any other things....can you help me out?
Sar replied: "you shouldn't avoid any foods - just be conscious of foods high in vitamin K such as brocolli or spinach - its being consistent with eating. dont eat a pound one day then none the next. If you like the foods make sure to have what you do normally and your doc will titrate your dose to fit that
make sure to tell all docs/pharmacists your taking coumadin and ask if there are any drug interactions since there are alot!"
senoritapeaches replied: "This is a question you should ask a professional. Always consulate your doctor, a school counselor, nurse, or appropriate professional for more accurate answers. Good Luck"
ZZZZ replied: "Do not eat large amounts of leafy, green vegetables or certain vegetable oils, such as soybean or canola, that contain large amounts of vitamin K. Avoid juice or products that contain cranberries. Ask your doctor about eating licorice while taking warfarin (Coumadin)."

Babe replied: "I know broccoli is one to avoid."
James M replied: "I know you are looking for specif foods. On the Comedian website is a article is a list of vegetables to avoid that affect the PT value when tested. I personally found after weeks of being in no compliance between 2.0/3.0 that the :"green's" were the ones effecting me mostly. Now I go monthly for the last 7 years and not a single instance of non compliance.
You can indeed eat amounts of vitamin K containing foods. Testing, weekly, when you first get on this stuff is a must. Once you figure steady up your diet and take the proper dosage to offset the eating of certain vegetables, then it pretty much stays right in spec.
I would eat a steady continuous diet so that the medication dosage can be perscribed for his certain diet no matter what it is. . That is how it works in practice. So dont eat greeen by the bushelful one week and non the next . Steady is the word here. (greens contain K)"
