Does fluoxetine cause weight gain and is it a safe drug for anxiety? Ive been on many other anxiety meds including wellbutrin which made me sick, lexapro which didnt help me and paxil which caused me to gain a lot of weight and zoloft which made me very paranoid. my doctor wants to perscribe me fluoxetine and im wondering how this drug is compared to others.

thycamail replied: "The meds you described are SSRI's (selective seritonin reuptake inhibitors). Although they have similar actions, you may have to try several different drugs to find one that works for you. Fluoxetine will certainly help with anxiety (it is sometimes prescribed for social anxiety). Some of the SSRIs can cause weight gain. This is generally caused because patients will recoup their lost appetites when the depression lifts, not because the drug caused the weight gain. Remember, SSRI's may take up to 6 weeks for their effects to be fully apparent and the depression to lift. I wish you best of luck!"

If someone is taking fluoxetine, is there any drug that the person should not take? This person is 30 years old. He is in good physical health. He has been on fluoxetine for the past 2 months and in psychotherapy for even longer because of a recent breakup and the pressure keeping his job under the bad economy.

Chanhassen replied: "Most drugs should be fine with fluoxetine, EXCEPT for any drug called an MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) These drugs are used to treat depression, also. The most common one is selegiline, brand name Emsam (in the USA). Mixing an fluoxetine with an MAOI can easily kill you. However, this drug is not commonly prescribed at all becasue of it's dangers. I don't think you have anything to worry about. If you ever have any questions about medicine, don't hesitate to call your pharmacist!"

what are the side effects of the drug fluoxetine? checked internet but they just say basics? could people tell me of there personal experiences with the drug crazy meds is not a go0d site. who calls a website crazymeds its not good at all..it in turn makes people feel that if they are on that certain type of medication they are crazy which is totally incorrect!!!!!!

Some of the side effects can be avoided if you take it at night or start with less than the therapeutic dose. Most people think it causes less libido, but I think that it's depression that causes that. Usually the side effects go away before the drug starts working."

What is a good replacement drug for someone on Prozac (Fluoxetine) and Clonazepam? I do not want a replacement for prozac since I am going to be staying on that one. I am looking for suggestions on what would be a good replacement for clonazepam (to take in conjunction with prozac) What are some other good combinations with Prozac that people are taking/have taken in the past - that have worked for them. Thanks, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

imaquitter replied: "I agree that Prozac is hardcore. I have read some of your other questions, and given what you are going through with your husband, you should be depressed. Prozac is normally used for people who have long-term mental illness and more serious depression. I agree that Klonopin/Xanax/etc, and Lexapro would be much, much better. Ask you doctor about Zoloft or Lexapro, those treat Anxiety and Depression, and are newer drugs with less side-effects. Prozac is known to have a terrible reaction when it is misused or misprescribed, and can make you suicidal."
