Can antidepressants lose their effectiveness over time (5-10 years)? What about long-term side effects? Celexa is the drug. Taken for over 7 years. Do doctors even know how long drugs like this can be taken without losing their ability to regulate seratonin? On low dose for 5 years (20ml) and seemed just fine. Now having occasional days that feel like the "D" is coming back.

mompoo replied: "It is possible that you have become used to the medication and might need a change. Talk to your Dr. about it. He won't change it if he thinks you are still doing O.K.."

baby girl replied: "I don't know about Celexa specifically, but many drugs do become less effective over time as you build up tolerance to them. However, if the drug has been working consistently for seven years it is unlikely that it would spontaneously stop. More likely, something else has changed that is making you feel somewhat depressed. Maybe you're stressed out about something, or there's some other reason you might be feeling kind of bad. However, you should talk to your doctor rather than posting here on Answers cause even if we sound like we know what we're talking about most of us actually don't."

tls71_2000 replied: "I do not know anything from a professional stand point, just from personal experience. I have noticed that antidepressants seems to lose their "oomph" after awhile. It seems like Dr's want to keep using what has always worked. I would certainly tell the doctor what is going. You sure don't want to go backwards."

Arua replied: "It's a common problem for meds to stop working after prolonged use. Many of these meds haven't been around long enough to have the data of how long they can work. But its possible that a dose adjustment will be in order."

pinkflower18 replied: "yes after time your body becomes accustom to the drugs and stops working my dad is on antidepressants and he is always changing drugs because hes had it so long they are always mixing drugs. long time effects would be liver damage because of all the meds."

Are there any serious short term, long term, or side effects of Benzodiazepine's? I was taking an SSRI a while ago, but stopped because of Sexual Dysfunction. My doctor wants me to try Celexa (citalopram) because months later my anxiety has returned. I'm worried that it will too give me Sexual Dysfunction. Would a benzodiazepine be better for me?

raymondcasillas68 replied: "xanax works great for me! no sexual dysfunctions and the only side effect is that it may, not will, cause dependency. it depends if u follow ur dosage and keep it in control. wellbutrin, soloft, paxil and a few others caused me ED and didn't do the trick for me to dealing with my anxiety attacks and agoraphobia. i take xanax and it works well for me. some doctors follow the pharmaceutical mainstream and prescribe other new medications with tons of side effects. they also say u'll grow a dependency on benzodiazepine, but if u have the condition and need the other medication, won't u be dependant on that medication too? so unless they can give u a medicine that will cure ur anxiety for ever, I'd go for the benzo, it is very safe, no noticeable side effects and it's time tested."

I'm taking CELEXA...any long term experiences? Bad or good? Any different side effects? So far I'm good with it...a bit of difficulty focusing...enough focus to do THIS at work though ;)

Mary Boo replied: "Name Celexa Generic name Citalopram hydrobromide Manufacturer Lundbeck, Forest Laboratories Inc. First used in Approved: 1998 (FDA), since 1989 in Europe Family SSRI Indications Depression, Panic Disorder, OCD, GAD, Social Anxiety Disorder How does it work? Citalopram increases the amount of neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain by blocking the resorption of serotonin from the synapse, having little effect of other receptors, which is why it is called a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Citalopram appears to be more selective than other SSRIs, that is, it has less effect on other neurotransmitters like dopamine and norandernaline. This property results in fewer side effects, such as sexual dysfunction, weight changes, and also in a better drug interactions profile. Researchers also shown that frequency of treatment-emergent manic episodes associated with Citalopram is lower compared to other SSRIs "

What are some common side-effects of discontinuing Celexa? I have been on celexa or citalopram for about a year and a half now, and my doctor has asked me to try to taper my dosage to see if I will need to use it long-term. I am almost completely off the medication. I am in the 5th week of a 6 week process, and I think I am experiencing some withdrawal symptoms. What are some common symptoms of having a withdrawal?

Wireless replied: "google it. bing it. do it.."

is it good to take celexa? I take celexa for more than a year, i worry about long term effects on my body

angel_wings replied: "Ive been on it 3years now... But if I try to come off them I get effected really badly from discontinuation syndrome. You can be on them all your life so I don't think there are any long term effects......."

anyone ever been on an SSRI for over 10 years and try to go off it? how bad was the withdrawl? I am just thinking it might be time I am getting worried about long term effects been on celexa and some others for like 15 years now i think.

Bear F replied: "I'd do it under the care of a professional and do a gradual reduction over a period of months. The fact your wondering how bad will it be I would take it that you haven't undergone any therapy, maybe you are about too and thats good, but always under the care of a professional, we've only one brain ye know."

is Celexa hard get off of? I know when I was on paxil for years it was HELL to go off of anyone know about Celexa .. I have been on these types of drugs for well over 10 years now. I am starting to worry about the long term effects and am thinking of going off.

R b replied: "I was on Celexa for quite some time, was weaned off with no problems no negative side affects and to be honest, of all the anti depressent drugs my doc tried, that seemed to work the best."

looking for reliable studies done on antidepressants, especially in regards to longterm, negative side effects I have been on anti-depressants (Celexa) for 6 years. I am worried that the anti-depressant is having long-term, negative effects on my body (such as liver and brain). I have been trying to find some independent, reliable studies done on anti-depressants to see what, if any, long-term side effects there are. I have asked my psychologist, but he does not know. I have also combed through medical journals, but I still have not come up with anything. Can you please help me obtain some reliable information?

Kitty L replied: "Welbutrin is good. Go to the website called "ask a psychiatrist""

Nick replied: "Celexa has been found to significantly reduce premature ejaculation."

kate replied: "have you ever read the information on or in the packet, you can also look the drug up in the library, ask for help. Also get a second opinion from another doctor. You have a right to know about the drug you are taking. but ask youself this, why am i on this, how are things when i am not on it. May be you just need it and leave it at that. do not worry and be kind to your self"

Jerry replied: "wow. Celexa is a seratonin reuptake inhibitor. These drugs have no known long-term problems on your liver or kidneys. However, 6 years concerns me for your brain. The medical community is in the process of doing these kinds of studies now, but I have not yet seen anything published that's reliable. There are recent published studies that show that antidepressants in general are best in the short-term, but actually hinder the treatment of depression long-term (3 months or more.) Those that used cognitive therapy did better on average by 5 months into treatment, and continued to improve, basically "cured." The following is my personal opinion - see what you think. I think that doctors over prescribe anti-depressants when no tests to determine actual brain chemistry are performed. There's no doubt that anti-depressants save lives, but with the new studies out showing that guided cognitive therapy shows such success, it really feels bad to be prescribing these drugs. The body is also cause and effect. If you want to lose water, you drink more water. Your body interprets this as "water is plentiful" and dumps it's storage of water. Likewise, when you introduce any drug into your system, your body begins to adapt by altering it's chemistry to match. Perhaps this is why the performance curves of antidepressants being to ramp down after 5 months... I do know this. That if you decide to come off of this, you need to do so VERY SLOWLY and under close supervision. Let your friends know what's going on, and ask them to keep an eye out for anything fishy. Hopefully, you're getting a psychiatrist, and a neurologists opinion. 2 opinions are better than one."

Frankie replied: "I ran across the following websites TODAY - that My sis & I - are planning to check out. My sis takes Seroquel & I take Zyprexa. one is: ( The Kaiser Family Foundations's Main Website -- possible public views on timely & critical medical and Medicine ? issues. also: try: ( for debates, discussions, etc. & latest press coverages. hope these above two websites will help U out somehow; best wishes. I have neighbor who was prescribed Celexa and i've heard of it; i've never been ON it - yet, anyways. My neighbor who takes Celexa told me last wk. that she sleeps a lot, too, like I do-- since being on Zyprexa 2.5 mg. for past 3 yrs. i've gained 20 lbs in 3 yrs due to Zyprexa. I stayed off it 3 yrs ago for nearly one yr. & lost 10 lbs. WITHOUT trying. - then i went back on it - due to severe fidgeting and nervousness, etc. & i think my Manic phases were WORSE also. / this week I've cut it down to about half of the 2.5 mg. and I feel better! don't know if I'll make it OFF of Zyprexa or not OR if I should even get TOTALLY off of it. but i tired of needing too many hrs. of sleep - most days! I sleep 12 to 18 hrs. lots of days!!! am really tired of THAT; and before I ever took it - I only needed too much sleep SOMETIMES; most of time I DID NOT SLEEP ENOUGH back then. - but the weird thing is: When I was off of Zyprexa that almost one yr. --i still needed too much sleep the entire year - which I did not before taking it the first time - as mentioned ABOVE! - THAT IS WHAT's worrying me; --still needed too much sleep on Average - yet was too nervous and fidgeting and perhaps worse than I was BEFORE I ever took it - the first time. IT MIGHT NOT have been worse - but close to SAME - on that! Best Wishes to US - both!!! - this wk. - when i skipped 2 different days & did not take Any Amount of Zyprexa - i felt more Clearer - headed; sort of like depression Lifted! - but I afraid to go too long without it. Also, when I don't get enough SLEEP - while taking it - I don't feel well at all - Mentally NOR Physically! 50 plus yr. old in Ga. / female./// I don't advise going off med's without Doc's approval & also I will bell U that I've come OFF lots of nerve med's in my Life - I always tapered off - as slowly as I could. I went 4 yrs without any nerve med's - several yrs back NOW, then my former Dr. Mentally abused Me & then talked me into trying: Zyprexa ---5 mg. to start with; but after a few wks on it - I've always taken only 2.5 mg. Daily of Zyprexa & have not gotten diabetees yet (one of the possible side effects). I believe i would have tho IF I'd taken the 5 mg.'s daily of it ?"

Has anyone ever had a child on Celexa? I have a child with an autism spectrum disorder who had been on a very low dose of Prozac to help with extreme social anxiety and angry outbursts. Besides giving him lots of extra "energy" and suppressing his appetite, it didn't work out, so today his psychiatrist prescribed Celexa. I did some research online and found that it isn't approved for children, and even a couple mothers claiming that they found that their son's "bathing suit area" had shrunk. (I'm not sure about the validity of that site.) Has anyone here ever had such a young child on this or any other antidepressant? I'm really uncomfortable with this, but at the same time I have the clinic and school really harping on me about medicating him. His anxiety in social settings is almost so strong that he's nearly non-functional although he has the ability to perform reasonably well. When I refused medication for a year, they kept telling me that it was similar to someone denying a diabetic insulin. Does anyone know what sort of long term effects these medications have? At the same token, does anyone know what sort of long term effects that suffering with extreme anxiety have on a person? I want to help him, but at the same time, I don't want him to be a medical guinea pig.

aspiegirl replied: "i hope everything works out. you actually may get more information on the parents discussinon board of it is a site for those with autism spectrum disorders and there families. i take celexa for anxiety my self and ahave Asperger's Syndrome, yet I am 19 years old so there there is a big difference. You dont say how old your child is. if he is 5 or 6 it is a big difference from him being 12 or 13. i reccomend talking to your doctor about herbal supplements first. before you try anything stronger. please though check out that website"

jcox replied: "My son whom is six has been on Celexa for about four months. I have not noticed any shrinking down there, but I do not look at that area often anymore because he is not in diapers. He was having panic attacks over the summer. First they put him on Paxil which was not a good med for him. It made him rage for like three hours. So they quickly took him off of that. They tried him on Celexa which seems good with him. He still has anxiety, but no more panic attacks. He is on other meds as well (Clonidine and Risperdal). These meds are not tested on children either, but my son really needed them. Before going on meds he would rage for like four hours at a time. I did not want my child being a guinea pig either, but I do not want him to suffer with the rages etc. I think these children suffer being stuck inside these brains that do not cooperate with them. You need to way the pros and the cons yourself. Research the topic of the meds they want to put him on, as well as your sons disorder. Only you know how your son is suffering from his disorder, so only you know if the meds are worth the risks that may be. I know for my son and my family I made the right decision putting him on meds. But I am not in your shoes, so I can not answer for you."
