Is it unhealthy to take ibuprofen (advil) too frequently? I've been taking Advil 200mg ibuprofen capsules almost daily for a little while to deal with annoying headaches. Is this safe to do for extended periods of time or should I find another way to deal? Also, would acetaminophen (Tylenol/paracetamol) be a safer choice? I know it carries a risk of severe liver damage in high doses, but does it have fewer side effects associated with long term usage? I usually don't take more than one dose in a day, unless pain comes back or is especially bad.

bmac replied: "How much a day are you taking? 200 mgs. every 4 hours? Every 6 hours? For how long? Weeks, months? I think it's time to see your doctor if you have headaches every day. Ibuprofen will tear your stomach and esophagus up. Acetaminophen would be better. But there are other medications that your doctor could prescribe. Really need to find out WHY you have a headache every day, though."

Kdooo replied: "i take ibuprofen very often too and im wondering the same thing"

WildOtter replied: "Why the headaches? Do you have sinus problems? Perhaps the best approach is to figure out what is causing the headaches and see if you can do something about that!"

Thinks2Much replied: "There are lots of side effects to Advil, including rebound headaches. Before you start the same thing with Tylenol, consider going to a neurologist to check out alternatives for headaches that are created to be taken over extended periods. I did and it eliminated my headaches."

DOTTY C replied: "Ibuprofen can dammage your kidneys also. I'm allergic to it and it stops my kidneys completely. Had to have a cathater to drain the kidneys until it wore off. Then had to have tests to determine if there had been damage done. Please use carefully."

racer 51 replied: "anything can be unhealthy if you take to much of it. the biggest concern with ibuprofin is stomach problems. make sure you eat first. i think i would be more concerned with why your headaches are so frequent. i get them a lot too and take 600mg ibuprofin for them. about 4x a week. mine are due to stress and my jaw. get checked by your doc. or maybe the opthamologist. good luck"

budaklolo replied: "OTC medications are not made to be taken in longer term all of the drugs you take have long term side effects. you need to see a doctor to find out why are you having these daily headaches. The doctor and other medical expert will find out whether the problem is internal cause or external caused. its dangerous to pop a pill each day. The effectiveness of the medicine might have decreased that is why you need them more often. Its the same like a drug addict. So see a doctor to find out what is really wrong with you."

trojan replied: "Nothing is safe if you continue using it (they both have drawbacks, Advil being the worst in long term usage), eventually they will just stop working all together. The headaches could be caused by anything from stress, to brain tumors to misaligned neck or back. If it doesn't get any better in a week, I'd speak to a doctor about your headaches or see a chiropractor and see if your neck is misaligned."

lulu replied: "I know that after taking those drugs for years to aide my period cramps, i delveloped ulcers, which my doctor said was for sure linked to my asprin and ibprofen intake. I was even using the drugs in the right instructions on the back of the bottles! If you look on them, the bottles warn you that the drugs may cause stomach bleeding and other of other side effects. And yes the doctor also told me that acetaminophen is a much better choice."

onlymatch4u replied: "Ibuuprofen, acetaminophen, and other drugs are terrible for you. The problem is that they interrupt the liver's normal functions and you will notice that your bad cholesterol will go up and then you will have those problems to deal with. The other issue is that if you are having headaches, your body is trying to tell you something. The headache is a symptom, not the problem. You need to find out what is causing the headaches! The liver produces bile. Bile is stored in your gall bladder. When you eat oils the gall bladder squeezes and the bile breaks down the oil into cholesterol & water. The problem is that if you keep taking these drugs, you will find that the oils do not get broken down like they are supposed to and the oils will go into your intestines where they become toxic. Try this test to check your gall bladder & liver. Take one capsule of cod liver oil. If you burp it all day, you've got a real problem with the liver & gall bladder. The liver is connected to your sinuses and this can cause headaches. You may need to detox the liver & gall bladder. Also, candida, aspergillus, or parasites can cause unexplained headaches. Doctors are not good at helping with this problem if that is the cause. I would never, ever take that garbage unless I had a wish to get sicker. There is always a better way to deal with this issue. The best thing is to get rid of what is causing the problem. I would go to a doctor and get his diagnosis and then go to a natural healer with the information the doctor tells you. Doctors will only give you more drugs and shorten your life. There are many things that can cause the headache. Since I have been eating natural foods, eliminating sugar, white flour, all hydrogenated oils, commercial salt, and taking quality nutrients, I do not get headaches and a series of other things that I used to have caused by doctors, pills, and shots! I would strongly suggest you eliminate all SOY products and especially CANOLA oil. These can cause headaches as well as many other problems. Do you know what is causing the headaches? Good luck."

Ibuprofen/Advil/Motrin ok to take while breastfeeding? I have a killer headache and no Tylenol. I only have Ibuprofen or Excedrin Migraine-which I know I'm not supposed to take since it has aspirin in it. Is Ibuprofen ok?

Mommy to handsome Noah replied: "Ibuprofen and tylenol are the only ones you can take while breastfeeding."

Mummy Moo replied: "Ibuprofen is fine. Hope you feel better soon!"

Mary replied: "My doctor doesn't like it when I take advil, because of recent studies pooping up about organ damage. Some doctors don't mind if it's REALLY bad (e.g. I had a really bad tear, and my obgyn gave me a tylenol/advil combo for the first two days). If my headaches are really bad, I ask my mom to come by, and she'll watch the baby while I ly down with a cool cloth on my head. A little sleep helps. And drinking lots of water - a lot of times it's actually dehydration. If you manage without it, I would. But I am one of those moms who doesn't drink any aspartame, no caffeine, no alcohol (unless it's after she is in bed and she doesn't feed again for 11 hours), no cold medicine, etc. I miss my advil so much! I also have endometriosis, and I took a more strong derivative of advil, but I'm not taking that anymore ;( Well, my baby is worth it! I hope you figure out what is right for you and your baby, and feel better soon! edit - oops, popping up, not pooping up - total fraudian slip! don't you love mommy brain!"

Alexalicious replied: "Ibuprofen is fine. Hope your head feels better soon."

mystic_eye_cda replied: "Yes its fine, for one thing really low amounts appear in your milk, for another ibuprofen is given to babies directly. qtmama replied: "Yes, Ibuprofen is fine. I delivered in a baby friendly hospital (only 79 in the country - huge promoters of breastfeeding and rooming in) and that's what they gave me for cramps after I delivered (which I don't know why I bothered taking since I went through natural child birth!)."

Getting wisdom teeth out tomorrow, dentist said to take 600 mg ibuprofen or advil 2 hrs b4, why? ? Ive read other questions about wisdom teeth on here and some people say advil and ibuprofen should be avoided before the surgery. Dentist also said dont eat anything at least 3 hours before, and the longer the better. Im geting all 4 taken out. Im being put to sleep (general anesthesia).

bradlandreth replied: "It will help minimize the swelling during and after. Ibuprofen (which is what Advil is) is ok. Asprin is not since it thins your blood and makes it harder for the holes to clot. Ibuprofen does not thin your blood."

Remember To Breathe! replied: "If you're advised to take pain meds before, it's so that they're in full effect when the anesthesia wears off (you don't have to wait until you're in pain and then an additional hour for them to work.) Also, ibuprofin helps reduce swelling since it's an antiinflammatory. However, you may want to double check because even pills and water may not be advised if you're being totally put under."

If I take ibuprofen , advil, calm and other pills too...? WIll i reduce my nerves or get sick? One or the other is fine, plz tell me what I have to do . I already took 5 ibuprofen capsules in the last hour

Your Friendly Jewish Accountant replied: "None of those have any impact on "nerves". I don't know what "calm" is. Those are for muscle soreness, dear. You can't just pop pills and expect to get messed up. Am I understanding this question at all?"

should you take an ibuprofen or Advil before tightening braces? im getting my braces tightened and im nervous if it will hurt

Ashlee replied: "yeah i would.. ive never though about doing that.. haha"

teethbrushes replied: "Yes, if your not allergic to it. I had braces since I was really young(eight or so I think) and it does help to take something before you go in, but not too strong, just an otc drug like you said. One should work, worked for me, that way I could eat normally in a few days, instead of a week lol! Wish you the best and straightest teeth! <><"

foulstonbrett replied: "i had braces well used 2 had a tooth knocked out in a fight yes this was a MUST for me i couldnt take the pain its very smart thing 2 do but only take 1 pill any more u will be well a little off ur rocker with braces tightening stay away from crunchy or hard foods for a day or 2"

Dr. Albert, DDS (UNITED STATES) replied: "FYI THE ACTIVE INGREDIENT IN ADVIL IS IBUPROFEN. THIS IS A GOOD PAIN RELIEVER FOR BRACE PAIN."

lalalalala :) replied: "Yes you should! I had braces for three years! Every time I didn't take Advil before I went, I regretted it majorly!!"

Is it ok to take Advil (ibuprofen) and Flexeril (muscle relaxant) at the same time? Are there any adverse reactions if I do so?

Ghee replied: "Yes - but do not plan to drive with Flexoril - hopefully, since it is a muscle relaxer - you can lie down and relax. (I'm assuming you are having some pain). You will prob. be sleepy."

LEC replied: "My doctor wouldn't let me. You can take tylenol or asprin with the muscle relaxant...sorry don't know what the issue is...I was warned against it."

SZO replied: "There's no adverse reaction when these 2 drugs are taken together."

I am 6'5" 350 lbs. i have very painfull tennis elbow how much maximum ibuprofen (advil) can I take daily? also how much naproxen(aleve) can I take ? and how much tylenol can I take ? which is best for severe tennis elbow strain and inflamation?

Eric E replied: "Your 350 lbs? and you were playing tennis? Was it on a Wii? Don't take any. Be a man."

barbc replied: "Naproxen is an NSAID, (non steroidal anti inflammatory) that will help with both the pain and swelling. Tylenol will only help with the pain. For these drugs, no matter what your weight, you need to follow the directions given on the label for maximum dosing, because with concern is with overtaxing your liver (Tylenol) and possible bleeding problems with the Aleve. Taking more than the recommended amounts of either one of these drugs will not increase their effectiveness, and only put you at risk. Wishing you a quick recovery,"

Mariafelix G replied: "YOU SHOULD CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR OR GO TO A PHARMACISTS IM PRETTY SURE THEY CAN HELP YOU OUT."

versantly replied: "see your orthopedist to inform him that the pain has worsened."

gillianprowe replied: "I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and suffered from Golfers Elbow for several years. No I do not play Golf. Anyway the Doctor was giving me steroid shots into the elbow, which worked for about 3 months and then it came back with vengeance. Just so happened I ended up at PT and then sent forward to learn Pilate's. During the Class we had to start to take our body weight up onto our elbows and I protested: Golfers elbow! The PT simply said 'If you do not do this you will never cure your Golfers Elbow!' I am thinking: cure, I have had loads of injections and they did not cure it. Anyway very slowly over about six weeks I started to let my elbow take the strain and the PT was correct, cured! Best of Luck"
