Can Zyrtec, Allegra or Nasonex cause high blood pressure? I have been having some pretty serious allergies this summer and fall, that have led to ear infections and blockages. My blood pressure has always been normal, but the last few weeks it is very high, 160/110 to 150/91 range. The only big change in me is that I have been taking Zyrtec and Nasonex, and that was changed last week when they noticed the bp problem to Allegra and Nasonex. I just don't feel right. Have a followup with the doc this Friday, and we will do a more thourough workup to see what is going on. I stopped taking the drugs because of the BP thing just today, and the pressure in my ear is painful again. Anybody had a connection between these types of meds and high blood pressure resulting from their use?

gwenduhart replied: "I sincerely hope that someone answers this question as well. I have been using Nasonex for about two weeks, and I noticed that my blood pressure was elevated within the same measurements. I'm afraid to continue using it."

Leo C replied: "I have been using csteriods for allergies for a long time. My blood pressure was always normal up until 12-18 months ago when it started to creep up. I changed my roid brand about the same time (trying several different ones) and have recently been using the Nasonex. A trip to the dentist revealed similar numbers to you. I am not certain it is the nasonex but my recent queries lead me to believe I should take some action. I am going to suffer through pulling the plug on all roids for a while to see what happens. I may go back to the more expensive becaonase or vansenase (Dont recall having pressure problems with them) and see how it goes."

What is a normal Blood pressure for my age? I'm almost 19 and my blood pressure is 103/72 Last time i went to the doctor (2 months ago) the nurse told me it was slightly low. Is this an okay result? for the past month, ive drank nothing but water, and lots of it. ive lost 11 lbs, and i sometimes take allegra and ProAir (inhaler) when needed, cause i possibly may have asthma due to allergies. i dont know if that causes low BP.

SUSAN M replied: "That blood pressure is a little low but not alarming. The big question is how do you feel? If your tired all the time or lightheaded or dizzy when standing that is a problem, if not than your fine. Congrats on the healthy lifestyle. If anything the inhaler might cause your pressure to go a little higher due to slightly increase in pulse rate. Not a big deal though, if you feel okay your likely fine."

Susan Yarrawonga replied: "Your BP is fine and is actually much better than 120/80 which is regarded as normal and acceptable. You are well above 90/60. Below 90/60 could be low BP if you suffer from dizziness, faintness and actual fainting spells. Above 140/90 is too high and needs treatment."

High Blood Pressure....at what point is medication needed? Most of my life my b.p. has been normal, really perfect. Twice now it has been high, once a few years ago from a medication interaction that lowered my sodium dangerously, and my b.p kept going up, and the past month or so its been high. Generally I was only getting it checked when in the Dr.s office for other things, like an ear infection or my annual exams. In the past two months, there have been three visits, and all three were high. This past time, they actually kept me for a couple of hours to keep taking it, gave me something to lower it, and sent me home with instructions to take it twice a day for a week. Its now 162/110, after just hanging out with my dogs on a sunny afternoon in the backyard. I thought it may be another medication thing, since I have been taking Allegra or Zyrtec the past few months for allergies and ear problems, but I haven't taken them for two days and its going up. Any ideas? I am 42, and slightly overweight, and am working on that. I have been checking my pressure 2-3 times a day, and the lowest in the past five days was 128/84 first thing in the morning, but the highest was 179/92 and 144/107 this morning.

Debbie V replied: "Yeah. High blood pressure is 141/91, so you've got a substantial case. Did you tell the dr. the story about lowered sodium? Unless you can get documentation that allegra or zyrtec have side effects to higher bp, you've got a syndrome that needs medication. Fortunately the med is not very expensive. If you were to lose 20 lbs (I'm assuming you are overweight, since I am), often the bp will go back to normal. Take care, TX Mom hbp patient"

Mike Joy replied: "Hello, The normal blood pressure depends on various factors, not least your age. If you are under 60, your blood pressure should ideally be below 140/90, with both the systolic (numerator) and diastolic (denominator) below these figures. It depends how much higher your blood pressure is at rest than this, and whether consistently so, to decide if it needs treating. A systolic blood pressure of 160+ like your would need treating if it was a genuine reading. THe fact that it was taken after you "played with your dog" suggests it may be higher than your resting figure. However, even if it is about 150 systolic at rest, it would probably need treatment to prevent cardiovascular, renal and ophthalmic complications many years later. Hope this helps."

Went to Hospital for High Blood Pressure Last Night? I am 25, I went to doc a month ago for physical and was put on diovan for Elevated BP ~140/100. I have been on the Diovan for 1 month. On friday I went to Dr. for ear ache he put me on Allegra D and told me to monitor my BP, yesterday I felt horrible and weak all day I tried to take my BP at FOUR diff. pharmacies and all would not read it, the pharmcist said it might be because my BP was TOO high for the machine to read. My friends and fiance talked me in to going to the hospital and when triage took my BP it wa 205/126. They brought me back and gave me Lopressin and Clonidine ehich worked in about an hour my BP was 145/95 and they released me. This morning I still feel really weak and drained but my BP is low 110/70 Does anyone know if this could be because my BP still? I paged my Dr last night when I was on the way to ER and he still has not called me back. I don't even know if I should take my Diovan since my BP is Low from the other meds last night.

remowlms replied: "You should continue to take your medication as prescribed unless someone at the hospital told you not to. Keep calling your normal doctor's office to let them know what is going on and your concerns about the medication and ask them what you need to do. Good luck and take care!"

deeppost replied: "I really think you should save these types of questions for professionals. Even if a doctor were to respond to you, how could you trust it? I would find another doctor and go in today."

FAT DOG replied: "This is very serious, find a specialist to get to the bottom of why your BP is so high b4 you stroke out,no kidding.DONT WAIT EITHER. GL"

MaryAnn replied: "Drink plenty of water, stop sodium and get on the treadmill. Walking or exercise is very good for you blood pressure. Medications can make it climb."

nervanna_21 replied: "you poor soul, all those medication is bad for you. don't you people ever heard of natural treatment. you need to find a natural care doctor. look in your telephone directory for one and they will get you better and feeling good. my sweet, you need to cleanse out all those prescription drugs out your system for you to get better. go to the internet, type in natural cure, send and see what happen. good luck. PS. in the mean time, follow your doctor instructions because natural stuff is not medication, it does not treat syntoms it treats the whole body so you need to give it at least 30 days"

Susan Yarrawonga replied: "110/70 is not low at all and is much better than 120/80 which is regarded as normal but it is actually high when you compare it with the ideal BP which is 90/60.100/60 is better than 110/70 and 90/60 is even better. If your blood pressure is above 140/90 it is too high and you need treatment. If your BP is lower than 90/60 it could be low blood pressure and that might need treatment if you are suffering from faintness and actual fainting spells. 205/126 (which was your worst BP) is dangerously high and a BP as high as that could lead to a stroke or a heart attack before you know it."

What alternatives were suggested to you instead of Allegra? For the past 2 years, I have had breathing problems that resulted in a rise in blood pressure among a whole bunch of other stuff. About 2 months ago, my doc prescribed Allegra which has eliminated many of my chronic health problems. My high blood pressure is finally normal as well with this med. We plan to start trying to conceive in December. Has anybody else continued to take Allegra or did the doctor recommend a different medication? What equivalent allergy meds are there that have worked for you if you couldn't take Allegra? I've already discontinued Nasonex. I will have another doctor appointment before we start trying, but just trying to get an idea of what others have experienced.

will any of these prescriptions show in drug testing? nasonex- nasal spray-used in morning of the afternoon test allegra-d used 2 days prior generic valium used 1 week prior generic brand of vicoden-none taken antibiotics- last one taken 1 week prior amlodipine- blood pressure meds- take daily i am taking all this for an inner ear infection. i took a pre-employment drug test friday will any of these show in the urine test?

Hot, hot mama! replied: "Yes, especially the pain medication. All that will show up are the ones they will test for, but you have a prescreen questionare to fill out and have to tell them what you are taking and why. If you don't tell them before the test, you have no chance at the job because nobody likes liars or people who conceal the truth on the job."

Kate replied: "Yes, especially the Valium and vicoden. If you really want the job, get a clearance or note from your prescribing MD to explain your possible positive results BEFORE the employer gets the results. You will probably have to retake the test. Some meds are detectable for a very long time."

Fexofenadine? Can you take this drug with high blood pressure? It's brand name is Allegra...

dobbieisback!! replied: "Check the package label. But I bet not."

lsbf216@sbcglobal.net replied: "My son takes this, and I know of no interaction with high blood pressure medications -- but if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, I would take care of that first, through diet, exercise or other medication."

mompoo replied: "Side effects with Allegra-D 12 Hour and Allegra-D 24 Hour were similar to Allegra 60 mg alone (headache, insomnia or nausea) and Allegra 180 mg alone (headache, cold or backache) respectively. Due to the decongestant (pseudoephedrine) component in both Allegra-D 12 Hour and Allegra-D 24 Hour, these products must not be used if you: are taking an MAO inhibitor (a medication for depression) or have stopped taking an MAO inhibitor within 14 days; retain urine; have narrow-angle glaucoma; have severe high blood pressure or severe heart disease. Side effects with pseudoephedrine may include nervousness, restlessness, dizziness, or insomnia. Headache, drowsiness, increased heart rate, palpitations, increased blood pressure, and abnormal heart rhythms have been reported. You should also tell your doctor if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, glaucoma, thyroid disease, impaired kidney function, or symptoms of an enlarged prostate such as difficulty urin"

Julia L. replied: "If you're not sure, it's safer not to take it until you've asked a doctor or pharmacist. I'm pretty sure Allegra is an antihistamine, not a decongestant or anything, but it's still safer to ask than to risk side effects."

Chrissy M replied: "Precautions Before taking fexofenadine, tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to fexofenadine or any other drugs. tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially cold or allergy medications, erythromycin (E-Mycin), ketoconazole (Nizoral), and vitamins. tell your doctor if you have or have ever had kidney disease. tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking fexofenadine, call your doctor. if you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking fexofenadine."

What could I be sick with? I've been sick for about the past 3 weeks now. It initially started out with pressure in the back of my head and some headaches. Over time other symptoms have come up, nausea, dizzy feeling, faint, rapid heartbeat, loss of appetite and just feeling too weak to do anything. I went to the ER and they told me I was having anxiety attacks, but Im not anxious about anything! They gave me xanax so relax me and slow down my heart. I eventually went to the doctors and they did a blood test that came back normal, although the doctor said my thyroid count was a little low, but she didn't seem too concerned cause she didn't give me any medicine for it. I was referred to the cardiologist and was told a have an arrhythmia. They did a stress echo test and said my heart looked great. He gave me metoprolol and allegra. I went back to the doctors yesterday. MY blood pressure was extremely high...170 was the top number I don't remember what the bottom number was. I'm only 22, not overweight or anything. She told me to start taking the metoprolol and she prescribed me a Z-pack. I feel like crap everyday. Nothing I do makes me feel better. Anybody know what this could be. I've had vaginal discharge for about 3 years, tried to get it treated but it didn't work. Could that just now be affecting me after 3 years??? I have no clue. I just want to get better.

kool kat ant replied: "i agree with the cardiologist on it being arrhythmia because mainly the factors that you said you have had the fallowing: hypertension (high blood pressure), - the contraction of your heart and how its pumping too fast tachycardia (rapid heart beats), - because of the abnormal speed (rhythm) of the heart pumping blood nausea, - your body is working over time causing you to burn more fuel than what you have fatigue (tired), - having no fuel left over to carry you on during the day lack of an appetite, - due to nausea cephalgia (headache) - due to all of them, mainly the lack of appetite BUT what i don't get is why the doctors are prescribing you with Allegra, that drug is used for allergies UNLESS they know that there is something that Allegra has and is used for something else other than allergies... but you need to talk to your doctor why are you taking these medications.... i understand Metoprolol ...because thats used for blocking the receptors thats in your heart.... the receptors in your heart are in a abnormal rhythm right now and i guess using that they're trying to either slow it down to a normal heart beat OR they're trying to kill some receptors to slow it down... depending on your dosage. please keep in mind, i hadda do some quick research on your drugs to understand the situation you're in and i think it is arrhythmia... NOT anxiety attacks because it wasn't triggered by anything so its impossible to have that without any episodes. oh and about the vaginal discharge that has been happening from 3 years sounds normal if its clear and non-order liquid.... from what i understand, all girls have it and its like saying your eyes get watery which is normal unless it gets sticky or smelly than you might have pink-eye but other than that... you should talk to your doctor again about what you or your doctor can do to make your life better because no one should suffer like the way you are right now. ask your doctor what are the drugs for and what you should be looking for when you do use the medications. oh btw, when you have whatever (systole) over whatever (diastole) when doing blood pressure, they're checking for how strong your heart contraction (systole) and relaxation (diastole) of the heart and when it pumps blood in and out of the body. i hope i helped a lil on this... i hope you feel better soon, take care, and if you wanna talk more just email me on here."

Feeling weird today? This morning I have felt very lightheaded. I also have been very hot all morning almost like hot flashes (howver I am only 22). Also while on the phone I was talking and feeling very out of breath. I woke up and felt like this and thought maybe it was becase I didn't eat anything yet. I ate cereal and grapes and I feel the same. I am only on Allegra an allergy medicine. I have been on it for years now and never had a problem. So I don't think it is that. I do not have asthma. Everything with me is usually pretty normal. I do not have any illneses or diseases also I get sick very rarely. I do have low blood pressure not extremely low but lower than average but I was told that is good. I have never felt like this before. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks for your answers about going to the dr but I don't rush to the doctor anytime the slightest thing is wrong

Lou replied: "i have no idea but i would go to the doctor as soon as u can."

Bannana Cream Cloud replied: "go to the doctor"

toadsbracker replied: "sometimes allergies can develop to anti allergenics. Also if your meds contain cortisone (sorry for the spelling) this can lead to sleepiness and feeling lightheaded etc. Cortisone is used to for vasodilatation which means it lowers your blood pressure. You really should see your doctor and tell him if this feeling persists while you take your meds (I assume that you are allergic to some pollen form and only take your meds during the season)"

medication interactions? i have a pacemaker and heard a long time ago i cant take decongestants. my head is so congested and my doctor gave me allegra -d to take. i asked the pharmacist first if i could take it because i felt the doctor was wrong to give it to me and he confirmed it was wrong. he said i can take antihistamines. i have some benadryl allergy at home but now i am worried about taking it because i am on blood pressure meds too. which ii forgot to mention to pharmacist. i take amlodipine. does anyone know if i can combine the two meds? i would like to take one now as my head is throbbing from being so congested but its to late to call the pharmacist or doctor. serious replies only please. if you don't know for a fact please don't reply. i will wait for tomorrow for the doctor but i would like to sleep tonight.

boogeywoogy replied: "Call a pharmacist. There are plenty of 24-hour pharmacies around."

David S replied: "Decongestants can increase your blood pressure through narrowing of the blood vessels and increasing the contraction and rate of your heartbeat. The pacemaker will regulate your heartbeat. Amlodipine opens your blood vessels, thereby lowering your blood pressure. Picture putting your thumb on the end of a garden hose, when you press down (narrow) the pressure goes up and the water shoots further; when you release your thumb, the pressure will go down when you open the end of the hose. Important - re-check with your physician! Your doctor should know you best. The pharmacist has good intentions, and has the textbook right answers, but your are not a book. If you have a regular cardiologist, that is the person I would recommend you call. There is no black and white line, and I cannot (nor should anyone else) give you definitive advice. It depends on the type of pacemaker, the severity of your high blood pressure, and the type and dose of the decongestant. Hope you feel better soon. Chicken soup works for me."
